Value contrast does the heavy lifting
When designers reach for hierarchy, the instinct is often to change font weight or size. But the most reliable hierarchy signal is value contrast — the difference in lightness between an element and its background. A headline at 90% lightness against a 10% background reads clearly regardless of weight. The same headline at 60% lightness against a 50% background reads as secondary text even in the largest size. This means palette selection is hierarchy selection: a palette with clearly separated lightness bands comes with reading order built in. The Editorial Warmth collection works well here because its warm neutrals span a deliberate range from near-white through rich dark tones, giving every surface a distinct role without requiring hue variation.
