Why streaming UIs are dark-first
Video streaming interfaces are almost universally dark-mode-first or dark-mode-only. The rationale is practical: viewing video content on a bright-white interface creates uncomfortable luminance contrast between content and surrounding UI, accelerates eye fatigue in low-light environments, and aesthetically positions the product as entertainment rather than productivity. The dark background recedes visually, allowing content imagery to dominate. For entertainment, media, immersive experience, or ambient products, dark-mode-first is the correct default — design for dark, then derive light mode as the secondary context.
