The three variables: lightness, saturation, and temperature
Most designers treat a monochromatic palette as a lightness gradient — taking one hue and making it lighter or darker. This produces a usable scale but not a great one. Professional monochromatic palettes control three distinct variables simultaneously. Lightness is the primary axis: step 50 is near-white, step 950 is near-black. Saturation should follow a bell curve: very low at the light and dark extremes, peaking near step 500 (the base hue). Keeping saturation constant across the scale produces tints and shades that look plasticky rather than natural. Temperature — a subtle hue shift of 5-15 degrees between the lightest and darkest steps — is the detail that separates exceptional monochromatic palettes from good ones. Light blues naturally drift toward cyan (cooler, shorter wavelength); dark blues naturally drift toward indigo (warmer, longer wavelength). Allowing this drift to happen creates a scale that feels physically plausible.
