Airports, hospitals, and transit systems have solved color-as-navigation problems that digital designers frequently reinvent poorly. Harry Beck's 1931 London Underground map established the core rule: each line gets one color, that color means only 'this is that line', and no color has a secondary meaning in the system. This single-meaning rule is violated constantly in digital design, where the same blue is simultaneously a link color, an information state, a brand color, and a navigation highlight.
Healthcare wayfinding research finds the most effective systems use 6-8 zone colors maximum, pair every color with non-color redundancy (floor numbers, symbols, text), and never rely solely on color for navigation. Approximately 8% of males have some color vision deficiency — wayfinding color is always a confirmation, never the sole cue.
In digital multi-product suites (Google, Microsoft, Atlassian), each product gets a single color that appears in the nav chrome, favicon, and document headers — meaning only 'you are in this product' and nothing else. This wayfinding-correct approach explains why these color systems feel coherent despite spanning hundreds of products.

Zone coding vs. path coding

Zone coding assigns color to an area: 'the red wing is surgical'. Path coding assigns color to a route: 'follow the yellow line to radiology'. Digital design almost exclusively uses zone coding — sections get different colors — but multi-step flows, wizards, and onboarding sequences benefit from path coding logic, where the primary signal is the next step rather than the current location. Choosing the wrong strategy is one of the most common wayfinding failures in complex digital products.

Seven rules for digital wayfinding color

One: assign colors to spaces, not meanings — 'red' means 'section red', not danger. Two: never reuse a wayfinding color for content emphasis. Three: ensure every wayfinding color has a non-color equivalent (section name text always present). Four: test all zone colors against deuteranopia and protanopia simulation. Five: use high luminance contrast (L50 or higher) for zone identification elements. Six: limit to the number of zones users need to learn — beyond 8, use a two-level hierarchy (color zone + numbered sub-zone). Seven: place zone color identifiers consistently so users develop spatial memory of where to look for location context.
